FOREST HOUSE
Nestled within 55 acres of second-growth forest in Oregon, the Forest House is an 11,000-square-foot classic American country home, subtly shaped by English influences—a nod to the clients’ years abroad living in London. Designed and built from the ground up over the span of six years, the home marked the first professional collaboration between wife-and-husband team Jessica Helgerson and Yianni Doulis, along with their respective firms.
The surrounding forest, untouched since the 1940s, was treated as a central character in the design. Yianni Doulis Architecture Studio nestled the home low into the terrain, to create a more modest, grounded presence, and designed an oblique, curving approach to heighten the sense of discovery.
To furnish the home, Jessica—who is half French with a busy Paris office—and the client embarked on a 10-day shopping trip across France. More than half of the home’s furnishings were sourced during this trip, from the famed Saint-Ouen flea market in Paris, to the antique market town of L’Isle-sur-la-Sorgue, to professional antique trade markets, with a final trip to several beautiful Moroccan shops in Marseille. The result is a layered, collected feel throughout the house.
