Zaca Creek Ranch

Zaca Creek Ranch is set on 1,600 acres of oak-covered land in California’s Santa Ynez Valley. Our client wanted a comfortable, casual environment that would reflect the barn-like quality of the home’s structure without feeling explicitly theme-oriented.

To achieve this result, we started with a color palette inspired by the surrounding land: warm off-whites, various browns and sage greens, and subdued red accents, such as kitchen cabinets whose crimson paint is mellowed with an earth-toned glaze.

To this we added warmly rustic materials and objects. Floors and cabinets are built from reclaimed tobacco-barn oak. In the bathrooms, neutral-colored tiles set off the warm tones of reclaimed wood, while complementing an array of unique mirrors and light fixtures. In the bedrooms, sliding closet doors mirror the look of the home’s exterior barn doors. Nearly all of the furnishings are antique, including old tractor seats we converted to bar stools, a reclaimed wrought-iron gate we used as a headboard, and an Indian cart that serves as a living-room coffee table.
